The champions City held; Liverpool brush Crystal Palace aside

HOW SAINTS HELD MANCHESTER CITY TO A GOALESS DRAW AT ETIHAD

Manchester City came into this game against Southampton full of confidence. So far in this campaign Pep Guardiola team has scored 17 goals, pundits have written the Saints off even before kick-off but that was not the reality after 90minutes of play.

After his team's defensive performance against West Ham last week, Ralph Hasenhüttl suddenly reverted to his more daring 4-2-2-2 formation, and the away side's high, constant pressing neutralized Manchester City's passing game in the first 20 minutes. With lkay Gündoan spurning a fine chance by headed over, and £100m-man Jack Grealish constantly testing the mettle of teenage right-back Tino Livramento, the ‘Saints' defence began to face the force of an aggressive side that had scored 21 goals in their previous four home games.

Southampton held firm, denying City a shot on target in the first half of a home game for only the fourth time since the start of the 2016/17 campaign.

Pep Guardiola's team started the second half worse than the first, squandering possession in crucial situations on a regular basis. A VAR review rejected a penalty and a red card for Kyle Walker on the hour mark when the England defender appeared to have bundled over Adam Armstrong in the penalty area.

The reigning English Premier League champions were able to insert Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, and Riyad Mahrez to try to shake them out of their funk, and Sterling believed he had found the winner off a rebound from a Foden header. However, VAR determined that the England striker was offside, and City's miserable day came to an end.

Southampton remains winless this season but will be pleased with a well-earned point after limiting the 'Cityzens' to just one shot on target, their lowest total in a Premier League match since March 2017.

SADIO MANE CELEBRATES AFTER SCORING

Crystal Palace were playing their first premier league match outside of London this season, and they got off to a great start. With only three minutes on the clock, the ‘Eagles' got their first chance of the game when Wilfried Zaha hoisted the ball over an out-of-position Alisson Becker, but the Brazilian recovered wonderfully to claw the ball onto the post. Jordan Henderson scored the game-winning goal against AC Milan in midweek, and he came close to scoring again after connecting with Mané's floated cross, but Vicente Guaita made a smart stop to keep the game level.

Diogo Jota then squandered a golden opportunity from just inside the six-yard box, but Sadio Mané ensured the hosts headed into half-time with a vital advantage. After a Guaita parry, the Senegalese international calmly despatched the ball into the net from close range to score his 100th Liverpool goal.

Liverpool attempted to extend their lead in the second half, and Guaita was called into action once more, making a crucial double stop, first rejecting Mané and then Salah's close-range attempt. Despite Crystal Palace's best attempts, Liverpool inevitably made it 2-0 as Salah forcefully volleyed the ball into the net from a corner. Naby Keta made it three with a thundering shot to seal the victory.

This victory has taken the Reds to the top of the English Premier League and also they are now unbeaten in 15 premier league games.

Sure, Liverpool is a surprise package this season. Remember they did not do much business in this summer transfer window.
