At the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, Lionel Messi's magnificent first goal gave Paris Saint-Germain a 2-0 Champions League victory over Manchester City.

Idrissa Gueye scored the game's first goal just eight minutes in, slamming the ball into the top corner after Neymar's mishit landed to him in the area after he missed PSG's match with Club Brugge due to suspension.

The visitors had a spell of control, with Jack Grealish looking particularly dangerous, but PSG held firm until Man City squandered a fantastic opportunity midway through the half. Raheem Sterling met Kevin De Bruyne's cross into the area with a header that struck the crossbar before Bernardo Silva's follow-up somehow did the same.

In the final minute of the first half, Kylian Mbappé provided chances for Ander Herrera and Marquinhos in the span of a minute, but neither was able to convert, and Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Ruben Dias' header, the final effort on goal before halftime.

SECOND HALF BRILLIANT GOAL FROM MESSI

Within 10 minutes of the restart, Man City created two fantastic chances through balls behind the PSG defence, but Sterling's shot went wide and De Bruyne's effort was saved by Donnarumma's legs. Neymar had their greatest chance of the half when he slid through after the hosts had weathered waves of Man City raids, but he couldn't locate the target under pressure. Soon after, Lionel Messi put the game out of reach for Man City, sprinting forward before creating a one-two with Mbappé and slotting a beauty past Ederson for his first PSG goal, defeating his former coach Pep Guardiola in the process. Donnarumma earned a clean sheet on his Uefa Champions League debut thanks to a late save from a Riyad Mahrez free-kick.
